23rd May – TFG Virtual Bank Holiday Weekend

Hello, this week our thoughts are based on “Give us today our daily bread” and Jesus’ teaching that “Man shall now live on bread alone, but on every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God”. There was once a Junior weekend entitled “The Word is not enough” but there aren’t any recordings from that online (more cassettes and mini-discs still to trawl through methinks), so this week’s talk comes from a pseudo-virtual weekend, 2015’s Truth Follow Grow which was to have been an ex-student weekend but it was cancelled due to lack of bookings. However, I used some of the material from it for talks in school. Enough of an introduction, let’s focus on Jesus.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus – 2004 Seek!

Bible Reading: John 8:31, 32: ³¹To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. ³²Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’

What does Truth mean to you?
Jesus said “I am the Truth”, and that God’s Word is the Truth (John 14:6 and 17:17) – how does that affect your life, your thinking, your speaking?
Does “God’s Word is Truth” get lost in a melee of other things that claim to be true in our world?
How do we stand on the truth in 2020?

I Believe in Jesus – 1996 All you need is Love

Talk: Truth, by Geoff, TFG meeting from ….? not sure. the bit about the number of chapters and psalm 118 is not right.
According to independent research, the King James Version (KJV) of the Holy Biblecontains 1189 chapters; Psalm 117 is the 595th; there are 594 chapters before Psalm 117, and 594 after it. Thus, it is 117, not 118, that is the centre chapter of the Bible.

What’s the link between “Give us our daily bread” and all this “God’s word is true” stuff? The bread of God’s word is freely available, we don’t need to ask for it and yet so many Christians are starving because 1/ we don’t read it and 2/ when we do, we don’t really believe it (we don’t stand on it in faith). The challenge this week is to take something that you know is in God’s Word that you have ignored or decided is not true and choose to believe it and live as if it is true. Cos it is.

Monthly Challenge 2: Get some old material and make yourself a colourful T-shirt/shirt/blouse. Here’s how. Post up to three photos on the TFG Massive Facebook page of you wearing the shirt – make it as ridiculous as you like with different patches of material . Photos need to all be posted on or before Friday May 29th.

Livin’ on a Prayer – 2005 Chapter Three (Colossians 3 Group performance)

Prayer: Between Ascension (last Thursday) and Pentecost (next Sunday) there is a call to pray “Thy Kingdom Come” for our nation. More details here Spend some time praying that part of the Lord’s Prayer for your town, school, workplace, family now. Then pray that you will be nourished by the daily bread of God’s Word too.

My thinking for next week or the one after is to do something different. Pizza Prayer was a big thing in TFG once upon a time, with people coming to the basement to eat Pizza and pray for their year groups. Maybe we could do that virtually too? We might try that in the next few weeks as I say, meantime have a good week!

Have you wandered further since Wednesday? I haven’t, I can’t decide where to go as most of my favourite places are there because of the cafe/pub etc. But maybe today…. Meanwhile, here is another virtual TFG weekend to help you to focus on God. I’m using Andy Farquhar’s talk from 2003’s Love, Honour and Obey to sort-of reflect the lines “Your Kingdom Come, Your Will be Done” as we work through the Lord’s Prayer.

I will Build my Church – 1996 All you need is Love

Let’s start this week with Prayer. Last week we looked at the first line of the Lord’s Prayer, Our Father using the mnemonic Friend, Authority, Teacher, Helper, Equipper and Romancer. Use any of all those words to help you to focus on God now and pray that some of those aspects of His character will be revealed in our nation as His people seek to bring hope and life to their surrounding communities. As we pray “Father, our (Friend/Authority/Helper etc)” let’s go on to pray “May Your Kingdom come and Your will, O (Friend/Authority/ etc) be done in my street/town/office/church/country as it is in Heaven”.

Weekly Challenge 9: Do something creative with Exodus chapter 3. It might be a family drama (only rule, Dad is not allowed to be God), or perhaps you could paint what you think the Burning Bush is like. Or maybe you’d prefer a Bible Study reflection:

a/ What do we learn about “God our Father” from this chapter?
b/ What do we learn about God’s intentions for His Kingdom on earth from this chapter?

It’s a Bank Holiday Weekend! Hooray! Well, alright, not much different to normal then. Yet 75 years ago this was the biggest celebration party the country has ever known (so I am told, before anyone comments). There’s a bigger celebration to come though, when Jesus ushers in the full revelation of the Kingdom. Meantime, it’s up to us to demonstrate it on earth. Several TFG weekends have focussed on the Kingdom and taken their theme from the Lord’s Prayer. We’ll follow some of those threads in the next few weeks, starting with …. Our Father.
